| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to prepare the students for their BA Honors dissertation and its requisite proposal, which they will have to submit in years two and three, respectively. It encourages the students to explore aspects of the fields in which they are interested. At the same time, the unit will allow for a more robust pedagogical environment for dissertation supervision. Through a combination of lectures and seminars, students will be expected to consider and apply their previous learning to a range of potential topics. Additionally, weekly activities will provide students with sequential and progressive guidance from the lecturers to practice elements of academic research, such as evaluating and analyzing sources, utilizing various types of rhetoric and discourse, and applying theories to textual references. The outcome of the study-unit will be polished dissertation proposals that each Honors student can then submit to the Board of Studies for approval. Study-Unit Aims: - Ground students with a foundational knowledge of essential methods of research in Chinese studies; - Train students to understand the conceptual and theoretical elements of a research proposal and to put those ideas into practice; - Provide the students with ample opportunities to engage in academic writing and feedback. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand and articulate the fundamental elements of academic research, especially in Chinese Studies; - Write a dissertation proposal; - Adhere to standard academic writing and citation practices. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define and develop suitable research questions; - Find and analyze appropriate resources for a research project; - Read and write critically about scholarship in Chinese studies.
